Ghosting

I feel like I'm in between worlds at the moment. Caught between Korea and the United States. In just under ten days I leave Korea, possibly for good, to head back to the States. I really don't want to go back yet, but have no choice in the matter. Right now I am in two worlds, and belong to neither.

Beat down and more than a little irate...

Know I have been lax in posting recently. With all the confusion and chaos going on with my staying/leaving Korea, been burning the candle at both ends. So far I have learned that yes I may stay or go. I'm getting no support from my parent company, who refuses to release moving funds until they absolutely have to. It also seems that the people who decide about my contract could not pull their collective heads out of their asses with a tow truck. Hopefully things will be sorted soon and can get back to having a life.

33 years....

33 years, I now have a year for ever country I have visited. Guess I need to visit a couple more before next year.

Stressed

Pretty stressed out at the moment. Waiting to see if my contract in Korea is getting extended. The Koreans say they want to keep me, but are haggling over price. The first deadline was the August 1st, after negotiations the new deadline is the 15th. If no extension goes through, I fly out September 1st. This means my entire life is on hold waiting for a decision. Now I have to start setting up a move, schedule a flight home, find a new job, and a place to live all of which will have to be able to be canceled at a moment's notice.

Sudden storm

It starts off with a few fat drops of rain falling from swollen dark clouds. Nothing to worry about keep going. Then the bottom falls out. Sheets of rain and hail come, the wind howls. A bright flash, and the peal of thunder reminds me that we are in the middle of a river on a rubber raft holding metal oars. A broad grin splits my face as I look at my companions, more than one wants to head for shore and wait the storm out. Our guide pushes us forward, wearing a grin matching mine.

Life is short, live it while you can.

I want to be evil...

After watching the new Harry Potter movie, I want to be evil. Not due to any wish for world domination or the need to foil some meddling kids, no evil just has the best wardrobe. Seems that with the whole call of darkness comes fashion sense.

Tomorrow...

I look down at my watch and wince, time to make a discreet exit. Drifting towards the door, my farewells are met with hugs, handshakes, and the offer of more libations. As usual discreet has gone out the window.

"It's not that late you could stay a bit longer."

I look down into deep dark eyes, it's a fight not to drown in them. The rest of the bar fades into nothingness, the clean crispness of her scent cuts through the smell of smoke and alcohol. In the back of my mind something primal feels the warmth of her nearness and hungers.

"Afraid I have to, us old timers need our beauty sleep. Not all of us are as blessed as you."

I grin mischievously, still trapped by her eyes. A coy smile graces me.

"Call me tomorrow?"

"My word on it."

Her eyes close, releasing me. I feel the heat of her breath on my cheek. Our lips meet as the world drops away.

Who knows what tomorrow holds? I can't wait to find out.

Too many goodbyes...

Been saying too many goodbyes lately. It is the nature of this business that people come and go, that dose not make it easy. I've never been the most sociable of persons, so when I have to say goodbye to a friend it leaves a icy void where someone should be. This morning I said it again.

Things started off with the intervening hand of Murphy's law.

"Morning... What time is your train?"
" 6:59..."

Things kick into high gear as realization kicks in.

"Darlin, it's 6:30. Get up and get dressed, we gotta go!!!"
"None of my alarms went off, how does this happen?"
Fumbling on a pair of socks "Don't worry bout that now, we gotta move."

I watch the train door close and feel the coldness of a new void. I'm sure we'll meet again, the world is a small place.

White knight redux...

I don't think I'll ever understand the motives of many people. To see someone in trouble or pain and not help them, bit of an alien concept to me. Even if I truly hate a person, I'll help them if they are in need.
Here recently a person I know has been in a bad place. Not only did their "friends" not lend a hand, but some tried to take advantage of the situation. I just don't get it.

Truths from the weekend.....

Been a strange and eventful weekend, learned some truths (some good some bad) and had way too much fun.
Started Friday night in the Shisha (hooka) bar. Love this place, mellow and relaxing. Nothing like kicking back, drinking wine, and smoking the hooka. During the chitchat I learned some truths about some folks, and feel the fool for trusting them. On the plus side learned one friend is completely trustworthy.


Then off to the mud festival, a total blast. Imagine, if you will, THOUSANDS of westerners and Koreans getting together for drinking and playing in the mud. Some of the truths from revealed here were:

I am cursed to have a farmers tan. 2 days of sun, and my legs and trunk are still way too white. On the plus side I apparently don't burn either.

If you are a 98 pound man there are things you don't do. One of them is to lay claim to a patch of public beach during a festival to set up umbrellas that people can pay to sit under. If you do this and then try to kick a lot (600+) of drunken partying folks off of it, you do not start with the large group of drunken G.I.s.

During such a festival as this, if the stores near the beach sell fireworks they will be used on the beach. Drunk westerners will shoot roman candles at any thing/body. Trying to stop these things from happening is unwise at best.

No beach should be without rum or tequila. Soju and Makali (Korean booze) just doesn't do the job.

At no time should you bring any small dogs to an occasion as this, especially if you have dyed their ears and tail different colors (don't ask, it is a fashion statement here).

All in all a good time was had

This mantra repeats in my head, as I try to ape the smooth movements of my teacher. The tempo of the music is contagious.
"OK, man you're doing good. Now remember that your dance partner will be moving with you, so keep the timing. If you loose it, someone is gonna get stepped on."
Part of me is glad that I decided to get some basics before heading to the salsa club, the other side wants to jump right into the mix and learn by doing.

Concentrating on my feet, my arms are left to their own accord.
"Dude, um... I don't think you're gonna be blocking punches."
Looking down I see my arms have gone into a defensive position, the foot work is similar enough to a martial arts form that muscle memory has taken over. ~sigh~ Now all of me is glad that I got some basics first.

Randomness

Bit of a random day today, my mind is pinging all over the place. The rainy day outside has me bored and restless, not a good mood to be in at work. Some randomness of the day so far:

If I can not tell you some information because it will violate a contract, asking the guy beside me will net you the same answer.

The creator of the cell phone will be both loved and despised throughout history.

Subjecting your coworkers to the smell of Corn nuts in a small office should be punishable by a severe beating. Loudly crunching them and smacking you lips while you eat said snack food, should be grounds for a violent painful death.

It costs nothing to be polite. When a engineer flies across the world to help you, and after 2 minutes of conversation you make a comment about her chest is not a good way to keep goodwill up and running. This also has the added effect of making the large technician beside her irate (yours truly), and can involve very pointed words when she is out of earshot.

Why are the stupid ones always put in to management positions?

Lunch really needs to hurry up and get here.

Sadly enough I was not talking to a child, this is from a young woman working on her masters in "Socio Economic Design and Construction". Yet another reason that fanatics are dangerous. Truth be known, I wish everyone could just be nice to each other. Alas I don't think human nature allows for that.

Surpise

He's younger than me, faster than me, his eyes burning with fire. His country,his studio, his students and countrymen cheering him on. We lock eyes and I see it, that moment of surprise as fire meets ice. He has lost.
His attack comes with only the slightest tell, but that is enough. The kick that should have taken my head off finds empty air, and I am upon him. Chain punches rain down on him as tries to understand how I got so close. In a panic he tries to back away only to find his foot won't rise as mine has it pinned. He jerks his foot back as I release it and give him a slight nudge, the rest of the studio has gone quiet as their teacher flies off his feet.
With a grin I strip the padded gloves off and offer him a hand up.

What happens when two sides of your nature come into conflict?

"gnothi seauton" or "Know thyself" was inscribed in the pronaos of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. At times I don't know if I truly do, and others I think I know myself too well. I suppose this lumps me in with the rest of humanity, scary thought.

Passing in the night

The cool glass presses against my back as I wait. The cab dropped me off into the hot languid night too early, now just to wait. The throngs of people rush by me, I scan the crowd. A face stands out, our eyes meet. The distance between us closes, surprise and curiosity meet my steady gaze. Light banter is exchanged, queries are answered, and farewells are said. Our ways part and again I wait.

Why fight?

Why fight? A better question would be "Why live?".

Not talking about fisticuffs, talking about life in general.

It's not about winning or losing, it's about having tried. It's about standing up for what you want and those you care about. It's about not choosing the easy path. It's about passion, pain, joy, and in the end it's about life.

Can't sleep...

I lay in bed, the night beckoning me with the promise of repose. My mind races with the thoughts of the day, the harsh red LED of my clock displays 10:30. I close my eyes and try to quell the flow of thoughts to no avail. Words and images flash across the back of my eyelids. I toss and turn trying to find a comfortable position, with a sigh I get up and have a drink of water.
Returning to the my bed, scarlet numbers glare at me 02:00. I try again to slumber, almost immediately my mind is flooded. Guess there is no choice, time to try the place. Under the accusing 04:00 I create the flame in my mind, and let it all burn away. With all the thoughts gone and the flame extinguished I start to fade. The world becomes soft and begins to s.l..i...p a...w.a....y....


CRACK!!!


The world snaps into sharp focus, every sense dials in at the sudden sound. Muscles tense and prepare to move. The glue holding one of my mounted photos to the wall has let go allowing a Hong Kong Skyscraper to crash into my floor. 04:15 dances before me mockingly. The rest of the night passes in reverie. Never fully asleep and not quite awake, the false sleep of wakefulness.
The blaring crescendo of my alarm clock is no surprise, 0600 beams at me triumphant. It's gonna be a long Monday.

Trust

Some things came to light this weekend, they dealt directly with a situation that has caused me much confusion and more than a little bit of hurt. Managed to reopen some things I thought I was over. Seems that a lot could have been avoided if outside parties had simply either kept their advise to themselves, or said you two need to talk and come to an understanding. Some of the people I trusted gave advise one way, and then told me the opposite or played dumb when dealing with me. This actually hits harder than the actual situation.
When I call someone a friend, that is someone I put my trust into. I know many people but only consider a very few friends, these are the people I love like brothers and sisters. That none of the folks involved played me straight on this, kinda leave me floored. Things done with "the best intentions" often fall short of the mark.

The place

I stand knees slightly inward, head and shoulders slightly back, arms raised in front of me, hands unclenched and fingers at my target. My mind is teaming with unnecessary thoughts, so I build a fire.
All anger goes into it, all fear, all longing, all sadness, all happiness, all emotions burn away. Next comes the issues of the day, all the issues from work, her eyes, it all burns away. Everything I am burns away, leaving nothing but the fire and with out fuel it goes out. This is the place.
Senses expand and the world slows down, the guys across the gym play basketball in slow motion. Finally I move, the heavy bag jerks from the impacts. Every bead of sweat is felt, the heart races to keep up with the demand. I hear the hushed whispers as the basket ball players stop to watch. The cycle continues, formlessness is given form, every breath is measured, every movement precise, nothing is wasted.
Finally it ends, and I leave the place. The world rushes in and fills the void. I feel everything again, but it doesn't seem as important. My body aches, and all I can do is smile. It's been a long time since I came here, and I have missed it.

I received the call this morning, I've been waiting on it the last couple days. Waking from a dead sleep, I look at the phone and grin.

Saying goodbye....

Said goodbye to a friend last night. She is leaving the country to pursue a better life. Quite a bittersweet evening, laughs and smiles that never quite reach the eyes. Promises to visit that ring hollow were exchanged. After all is said and done farewell is said and the lingering emptiness is left.

Deja Vu

I've had it pretty much all my life. See and do things in a dream, then later down the road have these things happen. It happens randomly, and most of the time I don't remember the dream till I'm in the situation. Saturday this happened again, it was almost like the night was scripted. A very odd feeling. How come this can never happen with Lotto numbers?

Introduced to a fun little drinking game last night, called "I've never". Basically you go around the group and say "I've never (insert some act here)" if some one in the group has done that, they drink.

Tempus fugit

Another weekend down, August looms before me. Seems that the last few months have flown by. Coming up on a point where many of my friends will be leaving and returning to their home countries. I am also waiting to see if I will be staying here (stupid contract negotiations), if I don't hear something soon back to the US for me. How can a day pass so slow, and a month go by in the blink of an eye?

A drama free night

Had a good relaxing evening last night. A little wine and cheese, a charming friend, and some Guy Ritchie films. All in all a nice drama free night.

Chasing the ghost

Spent a large portion of last night trying to help a friend, so am quite tired at the moment.

My friend is quite literally stressing herself sick over a relationship that may or may not exist. Smart thing to do would be call the other person (face to face would be better, but time zone and location are factors here) and ask them what is going on, get the answer you need and move one way or the other.

Being that this is a matter of the heart, the smart thing is probably not going to come into play. Fear of rejection keeps the call from happening, but then anxiety about what is happening eats away at her. Not the best of situations.

To my point of view she has three options:
1. Make the call, have the talk and move on.
2. Say enough is enough, put a stop to it and move on.
3. Stay where you are and keep beating yourself up with worry.

It weighs on me to see a friend going through this sort of thing. Not too much of a way to help, save listening and offering advise when they ask (only when they ask, very important that). The only way things are going to improve is to move forward, one way or the other. Good or bad you can not keep chasing the ghost.

Oh the humanity!!!!

Torture, a very scary word. Brings to mind images of racks, red hot irons, and large men in black hoods. At Guantanamo Bay it apparently means something completely different.

Now I am not one to suggest that prisoners be treated badly in way, but come on.
No scented deodorant and shampoo, the cleaners leaving marks on the walls, and a ball that "hardly" bounced. Sounds like a cheap motel rather than a prison.

So what would you say to conditions where you slept in a "coffin locker (1,2)" stacked three high and shared your room with around 100 other people? Where you rarely see the light of day for months at a time? Where not only do you have no ball, you have no place to use it? These are the conditions that the men and women of the US Navy live in every day. I spent 5 Med cruises, and 1 West PAC (not to mention the work ups and other miscellaneous exercises) living like this (roughly 5 years). Not once did I whine about deodorant being unscented, so forgive me if scoff at this.

Only human....

It is always a shock when someone who you respect proves to be just as human as you. Is there anything as disheartening as watching a pedestal crumble? Can you look at that person in the same light ever again? What do you do if you are the person on the pedestal, and you are suddenly only human?

Changing the world

Had a friend of mine ask me this weekend, how she could change the world. Being one for extrospection (and introspection, I like spection in general) this got me pondering. How does one person change the world?

Passion , lasting change does not come to the apathetic.
Patience, lasting change does not come quickly.
Dedication, lasting change does not come easy.
Sacrifice, lasting change does not come cheaply.
Strength, lasting change does not come without work.

These are things I feel are needed in a person to change the world. How they use these traits are just as important as having them. From what I have seen,

The least effective burn with too much passion, they force their views down the throats of everyone around them. The with us or against us ideals, no compromise. Right here right now, everything or nothing. They force change.

The middling will listen to compromise, and try to lead from the front and coax people to come to their side. They teach change.

The truly effective, see the world as it should be and live their lives accordingly. Others see this and instinctively follow suit. Thus the change comes with out being realized. They are change.

Just started watching the show Heroes. If you don't know it's a show about people suddenly discovering that they have super powers, and the drama that comes from them. I realized something watching this....

I could not be trusted with any type of super power.

Observations from the weekend

The late night partying is just not as fun with out certain people around.

I must be growing up, my wardrobe now included cuff-links (pretty spiffy ones to boot).

Well the trip to Hong Kong was a blast, a great time was had with my host and adjunct tour guide. Hong Kong is probably my favorite city on earth, there is just something about it. The lights and sounds, it feels like it is a living being. At night it is just amazing, looking across Kowloon harbor is a breathtaking sight. I still have to download my pictures and post them.

Blame...

The shootings at Virginia Tech, was a tragedy. A lot of students dead due to one kid's dementia. Turn on the television and you get bombarded by reporters and experts, all showing mock concern as they try to turn this horrific act into a political weapon. Once again I am sickened by how the media tries to cash in on sorrow and death.

Who is to blame? This seems to be the mantra nowadays. Is it the fault of the firearms, the state, the school, the parents, the rich kids, video games, rock and roll, the government, who? Why were actions not taken? In all the whys and who's one thing keeps bugging me, why is the shooter not the villain? In every news report and article the shooter, to me, seems to be made just as much of a victim as the people he killed. Why is he not held responsible for his actions? Many other people have hard lives, and manage not to go on a killing sprees.

Busy week

This week has been quite busy. Caught between work, and very busy social calender, this week has flown by. So far this week I have:

Helped my customers fix yet another one of the problems they cause themselves by not listening to people in the know (ie...ME).

Had dinner and coffee with a Scottish friend, and discussed all the high schoolish drama in our group.

Scheduled a trip to Hong Kong (YAY!!!)

Had dinner and drinks with the muse of my soul (I know you're going to eventually read this so have to poke fun at you)

Obtained all the stuff needed for Saturday's Toga Party , and only had one auto accident getting the stuff.

Paid for my Hong Kong trip (and received requests for various things from the wonderful city)

Had dinner with a Korean friend, who always manages to make me laugh.

Obtained information for some company bigwigs that decided to drop in unexpectedly.

Rolled up a Dungeons and Dragons character, a Kender thief (yep, still a geek at heart)

and still managed to make it to the gym every night.

And now it's the weekend, curious on what it will hold.

Hong Kong bound

Well made a snap decision yesterday, going to Hong Kong for a weekend. Been way too long since I've been there, and as an added bonus I get to finally meet a friend face to face.

Tired....

Last couple nights I have been plagued by insomnia. I was going to write about all the things that happened this weekend, revelations that were made, dances that were danced, and a surprise guest star all thrown in to the mix. Unfortunately just don't have it in me at the moment. The torpid state of sleeplessness is really kicking in. Oh well maybe tomorrow.

Vista Banished...

The ordeal is over, last night I reinstalled XP pro on my computer. It's like a great, red hot, spiky weight has been lifted (off very sensitive body parts). I can not begin to put into words, how I feel about Vista. The fact I spent money on this, for lack of a better word, program causes me much self loathing and shame. If you have not jumped from XP to Vista consider yourself blessed.

Time for a bit of ranting. Let's look at some political correctness and the way we kowtow avoid offending people.

Police were called in because a 10 year old boy called a classmate "gay" in an email. I remember growing up, we called each other all sorts of names. Never needed the police. Over react much?

Schools quit teaching about the Holocaust . I really am stunned by this, 6 MILLION people murdered. 6 MILLION men, women, and children butchered by hatred. Certain people might find that fact offensive? It might cause strife because their holy men say it did not happen? Look in the eyes of the survivors, talk to the soldiers who found those camps, stare at the pictures, read the documents, and then tell me it did not happen.

School district supports "Ebonics" . So much for teaching proper English skills, and getting students prepared for the real world.

Just give it a rest. Stop with the double standards, and quit trying to subject everyone to your half-assed "Brady Bunch" view of the way the world is supposed to be. I don't give a damn about color, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or anything else. I try to live my life, pay my bills, and make it to the end of each day. I don't try to make you accept my views, quit trying to force me to submit to yours.

Days of yellow dust.

I look out my window and see a sunny day smothered by dust. It settles like fog, blown in from the Gobi desert it filters the sunlight into a sickly yellowish green. Heavy metal contaminates are infused in the dust, making it not the sort of thing you want to be out in. A perfectly nice day ruined. Guess I'll clean some, Doh!

Down with the sickness

One of the downsides of working with Koreans, is their inability to take sick time. It's not that they don't get sick days, it is viewed as a sign of weakness to take them. This is an alien concept to me, if I have sick days they will be used. One very big reason is I don't want others catching the bug I have. Which brings us to the big cultural difference, and why myself and many of my coworkers are currently sick. Have also noticed here that when someone coughs or sneezes they do not put their hand in front of their face. Nothing like hearing a sneeze behind you and feeling the spray. Think I'm gonna get a big can of Lysol spray and start returning fire.

Irritating to say the least..

Certain things grind on me abit. These are not the grand problems of life, just the little irritants that cause grumbles. Here is a list of the ones that are vexing me at the moment.

Windows VISTA- 300 bucks for bug ridden piece of software. Let's see my Ipod software is flaky at best (hmmm....the Zune is crashing and burning and suddenly there are compatibility issues with the competition's mp3 player). Other software that I use quite abit is now useless, Photoshop CS, my photo printer, system mechanic, and quite a few others can't be installed. Now to try and find time to reinstall XP.

Political correctness- It is every person's right to be an asshole. If something offends you, tough deal with it. Get over yourself, drop the mock righteousness and just insult them back or ignore it. Making it illegal to say "certain" words just makes the underlying ignorance and resentment stronger.

Activist Actors- You played the president in a movie so that makes you an expert on international relations in what way? Wow, I wish I was rich and famous so that I could know how the whole world works. Two words for you "Bite me", you are an entertainer nothing more. With the bile that Hollywood is putting forth these days (with exception to Tarintino, Peter Jackson, Frank Miller, and a select few others), you should be expressing sorrow to the poor sods that watched your film.

Lack of common courtesy- I may be a brash person, but I am aware of the people around me and try not to be intentionally rude. I seem to be one of a dying few in this, it takes nothing to at least acknowledge another person's existence. It takes only a little more to just act civilized, try it sometime.

As I said, just somethings that irk me. There are plenty more, but those are for a later time.

Angels, Demons, and Addiction

This is a mantra that I was taught over a decade ago, by one of my first martial arts teachers. It is a basic truth, You have to know yourself and your limitations. I've been noticing that the last couple months, I have not known who it was walking in my shoes and speaking with my voice or acting in my guise. I did not even notice the stranger until a friend (ironically enough, a sympathetic bartender) asked me what was going on and why the change.

In the few months there has been a rage in my eyes, that he had never seen before, and an aggressiveness to my body language and actions. This has caused me to take a step back and look at myself, I'm an addict. Not to any drug, but to certain people. When I am with them the world is great. If their attention is diverted to someone else then the aggression comes on strong. When they are not there, withdraw.

Remember in cartoons, the little angel and devil that would appear on people's shoulders? Well little bit of that adding things to the mix. Certain friends try to guide me one way or the other. Angels who see it coming and try to cheer me up, and Demons who try to bring it out.

Time to step back, and get back to being me.

Saying goodbye to a fine old lady. The USS John F. Kennedy has been decommissioned after 40 years (All ships, no matter the name are referred to as female.). I spent 8 months aboard her supporting Iraqi Freedom, and am a bit melancholy about her retirement. On one hand she is at a well deserved rest, on the other she will never again stride the world. Goodbye old girl, you will be missed. Fair winds and following seas.

Why idiots should not see movies

Well, Iran is miffed about the movie 300. What happened to the days when you could go to the movies and enjoy one without some hyper-sensitive jackass claiming that it offends them? Not everything is a political/cultural/racist/sexist/whatever statement. IT'S A MOVIE!!! No hidden agendas (according to the creators), no political jab at anyone, no slight on any one's culture.

"The movie has fabricated the history," the IRNA news agency said. Maybe because it is a MOVIE based off a COMIC BOOK. I am pretty certain Spiderman, Superman, and X-men did a little bit of history fabrication as well (radioactive spider attacks, meteors with babies inside crashing into Kansas, and I'm almost positive the Golden Gate Bridge has not been ripped out of the ocean).

"The film has also been criticized in the United States as a thinly veiled attack on the Bush administration because it allegedly depicts Spartan King Leonidas as waging an illegal war." Again it is from A COMIC BOOK. The Iraqi war started in 2003 (trust me I was there for the kick off), the comic book was released in 1999, do the math. With the exception of couple scenes dealing with the queen trying to get help from the Parliament, the film was pretty much spot on from the comic. (So if anything the film is a thinly veiled attack on democrats for trying to halt support for the soldiers in Iraq)

Quit trying to ruin my fun at movies, get over yourselves and try to enjoy life. Some times a movie is just a movie, now let me enjoy my popcorn.

The weekend...

St Patrick's Day has come and passed. Looking like the final tally for folks at my party is 41, not bad turn out. The neighbors are not the happiest, but what can you do? As usual, the next day was time for cleaning and recovery.

Not all Saturday night was fun, there was some drama. At one point (after leaving my place and heading downtown to the normal bars) a friend found out the guy she had been talking to all night was married , so helped her down to a cab and saw her off. While down there, I see a really drunk (almost unconscious) girl sitting on the sidewalk next to the door to the bar. This is someone I had met a couple times, so helped her into a cab and sent here home. At this point the drama starts.
Some guy saw me do it, and comes up all puffed up like a rooster. Apparently he had been spending alot of money to get the girl in that state and was unhappy that I had ruined his chance to have some fun (he stated in much less nice words). I responded with my view of men who need to get women semi-comatose to have a chance of getting laid (also in very non-nice words), and quite frankly was itching for a fight (very unusual for me, but I really hate guys like this). Two of his chums dragged him away before things could get interesting.
So then it's off to grab a quick bite to eat with some friends, after seeing them off I do a quick trip back in the bar to say goodbyes and then head to the house as the morning sun rises.

Suspension of belief

Discovering that knowing too much about how real aircraft work, can sap some of the enjoyment out of watching tv and movies. Watching the first episode of lost, the plane has crashed and people are reeling from the event. I see the jet engine lying on the ground still running and sucking in wreckage and all I can think is "That's not right, that engine has no fuel and no power controls like that. Not possible for it to be running.". Then there is the classic explosion of jet fuel and instead of enjoying the loud boom and pretty colors the brain kicks in again "Hold up, jet fuel is highly stable and has a higher flash point than gasoline.". Sometimes knowledge can ruin your fun.

In my ever continueing quest to find new and exciting ways to get folks inebriated, I have come up with some quite interesting jello shots. Be warned some of these are not for the faint of heart. Still working on the names, so bear with me. For most of these make jello as normal and substitute 1 half the water needed with booze.

WOOOHOOOO!!!

Just saw 300, let me just say one word about this film "OUTFRIGGINSTANDING!!!". After reading the original book, I can safely say it lived up to it's source material. I won't say too much more about the film since I know some may have not seen it yet. I have not left a movie that pumped up in a good long time.

Sarcasm

One of the biggest things to get used to here, in Korea, is the total lack of sarcasm. This culture just dose not have it, this is truly the most mind boggling thing to me.

Today one of the Koreans saw the empty refrigerator box and asked me if we had a new one. I told him not yet we only got the box today and it will come later. At this point he asked me when it would be delivered.

This is not the first time I have ran into this, but it never fails to amaze me.

That damn Murphy!

"If anything can go wrong, it will." Since 1949 this phrase has proven to be the bane of many people around the world. Capt. Edward A. Murphy coined this phrase, it has proved true time and time again.

How many times have you been running late for work and had every stop light turn against you? How many term papers have been claimed by inopportune computer crash, or power outage, the night before they are due?

Kinda funny that one simple phrase can give a man infamy and at least some small measure of immortality.


Edit: And in Murphy related news. Not 30 minutes after writing this post I found out I owe about $10,000 in income tax. Murphy strikes again.

St Patrick's Day approaching!!

Saturday is the one day a year when we can all be Irish, St. Patrick's Day. Next to Halloween, my favorite holiday of the year. Last year I wore a green dress (such is the life of a hasher), this year I think I will keep to the more manly clothing (not sure if it will be green, might be fun to be pinched), and will be hosting a party. So tomorrow will be buying up plenty of refreshing beverages, and Friday will be cooking up Jello shots (there's always room).

Home again, home again....

Well, I seem to have made it back to Korea. The two weeks of vacation seemed to fly by way too quickly. Was a fairly good time, got to spend time with the family, did some target shooting with my dad, visited some friends, and spent way too much money.
